Don Johnson "High" In Denver
Don Johnson, of Kokomo, Ind. "cornered" the $25,000 Denver Open by defeating hometowner George McDonald, 254-225, in the nationally televised finals. After the first six-game block in the qualifier, Johnson moved over to the extreme right corner and threw the ball along the first board. It paid off as the Kokomoer stroked such gems as 277, 278 and 279 on his 'way to lead the 40-game preliminaries. In the finals, Johnson watched the round robin as McDonald rapped Sam Baca, 206-177, and Jerry McCoy 202-194. McCoy had the latter match all wrapped up when a split in the ninth frame buried his chances. The $4,000 first-place check he collected in the mile-high city moved Johnson into the leading money list at 11th place with earnings of $7,582. Bob Strampe was still the leader with $18,850. He was followed by Bill Allen at $13,437, Tommy Tuttle with $13,250, Billy Hardwick had $12,360 and Buzz Fazio $9,932. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
