Lefty Allen Right At Mobile
Bill Allen, of Orlando, Fla. got the lefthanders off the ground on the 1964 Professional Bowlers Association tournament tour by nailing down the $25,000 Mobile Sertoma Open. The Mobile tourney was the first in PBA history that two lefties had met for the championship. Allen defeated Jerry McCoy of Fort Worth, Tex., 225-210, to put $4,000 in the bank. Dick Hoover led the 24-game qualifier with 5123. Allen won 10 of 16 match games to take over after 40 games with 8932 while Hoover dropped to 10th. In the first match of the televised finals, McCoy defeated Marv Lowry, 228-226 Bob Strampe toppled Lowry, 233-198. McCoy then rapped Strampe, 227-191, to move into the finale. Strampe, who won $15,000 in the All-Star tournament, added $1,500 to his leading money total to make it $16,600. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Allen defeated McCoy, 226-210. ROUND ROBIN: Strampe defeated Lowry, 233-198; McCoy defeated Strampe, 227-191; McCoy defeated Lowry, 228-226. 24 GAMES *Johnny King finished 12th but had to drop out because of a bad finger.
