King "Runs" At Hialeah
Johhny King, the veteran from Chicago, won the $4,000 top prize and scored his first major tournament victory in the $26,000 Hialeah Open. King led through the first 40 games with an 8978 total, including his 550 bonus pins for winning 11 of 16 matches. Mel Henderlite was second with 8974, Vern Downing had 8933 and Glenn Allison 8861. In the nationally televised finals, Allison scored over Henderlite, 209-160, and Downing, 222-169. Downing defeated Henderlite, 223-195. This set up the final game and it was "no contest" as King ground out a 214-169 win over Allison. Allison was the crowd favorite after moving from seventh to fourth in the position round of the match game play. Glenn made his big move with a 279 game. Charlie Wilkinson led the 24-game qualifier.
