$23,600 SAN JOSE PBA OPEN
Saratoga Lanes, San Jose, California, Sep 11-14, 1963
Howard "Pounds" San Jose
George Howard of Detroit weighs only 107 but he knocked down much more poundage in pins as he captured the $23,600 San Jose, Calif. Open.
At that, little Georgie had only a couple pounds to spare in edging Vern Downing of Rodeo, Calif., 9336-9333. Howard felled 8686 pins over the 40-game route to Downing's 8683. Both received 650 bonus pins for winning 13 of their 16 matches in the finals.
Although this was Howard's first PBA win of the year, he has won three overall . . . Las Vegas in 1961 and Niagara Falls in 1962 .
Andy Marzich, who was blanked, lost $1,000 to second-place Harry Smith, who finished fifth, in the money-earning race. Andy had $27,698 to Smith's $25,827. Jim St. John was third with $24,535, Earl Johnson was fourth with $23,702 and the fifth man was Dick Weber with $23,608.
