Johnson . . . Again
Quiet Earl Johnson of Minneapolis, who lets his bowling ball do all his talking, knocked off his third PBA tournamentof the year when he beat out Billy Hardwick of San Mateo, Calif. in the $23,600 San Diego Open.
Johnson trailed Hardwick by 40 pins going into the position round but left little doubt as to the outcome when he popped 11 strikes in 12 pitches to knock of his 22-year-old foe, 278-234.
The 50-pin bonus gave Johnson a final tally of 9348 to Hardwick's 9294 for the 40 games. Johnson won 500 bonus pins for capturing 10 games in the 16-game finals while Hardwick had 575 for winning 11 and tying one.
