Hardwick Fires At Phoenix

Billy Hardwick of San Mateo, Calif. gave an indication of things to come when he went on a record pin-busting binge in the $20,000 Phoenix-Mesa Open.

Hardwick set a new world record of 5425 for the 24-game qualifier and then won 13 of his 16 matches in the finals to mark up a 429-pin lead over runnerup Harry Smith of Baltimore.

Hardwick's final count of 9738 included the 650 bonus pins. This was Hardwick's second PBA win. He took the Mobile Open earlier.

For Smith it was his fourth second-place finish of 1963 and the $1,500 moved him into second place in the tournament money race with earnings of $24,827. Andy Marzich still led with $26,998, Jim St. John was third at $24;160; Dick Weber had made $22,053 and Earl Johnson $20,407.
