St. John Hits Meridian
Jim St. John, the Chicago flash, is batting a cool .750 for his last four tournaments after winning the $22,000 Meridian, Miss. Open at Playland Bowl. St. John won his third test in four weeks by defeating Ray Bluth in the final game of the tournament, 221-191. In the meantime Ed Bourdase clipped Andy Marzich, 247-199, to move past Bluth in the final standings. Harry Smith was fourth and Marzich wound up fifth. The Meridian victory gave St. John an even $10,000 paycheck for one month's competition in PBA tourneys. He started his splurge with a second-place finish in Chicago, and added victories at Rockford and Fort Smith. The three top men at Meridian won 11 and lost five in the match-game finals. St. John's winning total was 9079, to Bourdase's 9032 and Bluth's 9003. By virtue of his latest victory, St. John moved in behind Marzich in the money race. Andy now had $25,818, St. John $23,875, Smith $22,152 and Dick Weber $22,053. 40 GAMES
