St. John Crowned In Rockford
It took some time coming, but Jim St. John of Chicago finally made the grade . . . He won the $22,000 Rockford Open at the Don Carter Lanes.
Jim had been knocking on the championship door for three years before entering with a 9138 pin total for 40 games. This included 600 bonus pins for winning 12 games in the finals.
At that, St. John had a rough time with Baltimore's Harry Smith in the final countdown. Smith banged out a 9113 score and won two less games in the finals. This cost the Baltimore Belter 100 bonus pins.
A couple real veterans showed their muscles in the Rockford event. Ed Lubanski of Detroit was third with 8956 pins and Buzz Fazio, another Detroiter, was in the No. 4 hole with 8905.
St. John was almost a wire-to-wire victor. The ex-sailor led the 24-game qualifier and never was worse than third in the finals.
