Zahn Wins Chicago "War"
Wayne Zahn, of Atlanta, Ga. lost the battle but won the "war" to carry off the $3,000 first prize in the Chicago Coca-Cola Open at Bowlium.
Going into the final game of the tournament, Chicago's Jim St. John trailed Zahn by 75 pins. This meant he had to defeat Zahn by 26 pins. The final score was 231-220 in favor of St. John and Zahn had won his first PBA victory.
Under the PBA scoring system, each victory in the match game finals is worth 50 pins, hence the closeness in the final count.
The new champion knocked down 8793 pins over the 40-game tournament route. He got 525 pins for winning 10 and tying one in match game play for a grand total of 9318. St. John, who led the 24-game qualifier, had 9306.
