Johnson Wins Second
Earl Johnson of Minneapolis knocked off his second PBA title of the year and third overall by winning the $21,000 Empire State Open at Schenectady, N.Y.
Johnson totalled 8874 pins to nose out Leo Mann' from St. Paul by 42 pins. Johnson's aggregate for the 40-game tournament grind included 550 bonus pins for winning 11 of his 16 games in the head-to-head firing.
Dick Weber of St. Louis had the dubious distinction of shooting the lowest game of the year on the PBA tour when he totalled 128 in the final game. Weber's "troubles" came from five splits and a washout.
Bob Kwolek of Detroit led the 23-game qualifier with 5083 pins but dropped to third despite winning nine of his 16 games in the finals.
