Piraino Is Warren Winner
Marty Pirano, an unheralded pro from Syracuse, N.Y., was almost a wireto-wire leader in wrapping up the $23,400 Warren Coca-Cola Open.
The 5-6 lefthander led the 24-game qualifier and then paced the field through most of the 16-game head-to-head action to bank the $3,000 first prize.
Dick Weber was Piraino's chief adversary and it looked as if the St. Louis star might do it when he hung a 269-205 black eye on Piraino in the 15th game.
Only three pins separated Piraino and Weber going into the position round. The pair matched spare-strike-spare-strike-strike before a balky seven-pin stopped Weber. Piraino threw three more strikes to wrap it up, 238-216.
The new champion, knocked down 8675 pins over the 40-game tournament route and added 550 bonus pins for winning 11 of his 16 matches in the finals.
