Duke Wins His Second Title Of The Fall

Norm Duke got hot at the right time, one week before the PBA Tour's most prestigious event, the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions. Duke earned his third win of the year and second of the fall by besting Ryan Shafer in the Brunswick Circuit Pro Bowling Classic at Northrock Lanes.

Duke, Clermont, Fla., started with the first seven strikes and cruised to a 245-195 victory. The win was the 16th of Duke's career and earned him $19,000.

Duke had everyone's attention in the title match as he was perfect through seven frames. A 10-pin in the eighth halted Duke's run at perfection, costing him a chance at a $25,000 perfect-game bonus.

"I was afforded the luxury of starting with the first seven strikes and having the match pretty much in hand," said Duke. "I had a good shot at the 300 game and just wanted to make good shots and hope for good carry. I felt like I made a quality shot. I'd make that same shot again."

Shafer, who had never finished higher than third, looked tough in the semifinal match as he disposed of the hottest bowler on Tour, Walter Ray Williams Jr., 245191. Shafer started with the first six strikes and never suffered an open frame on the way to the win.

Shafer had an open frame early after failing to convert the 4-9 split, but it proved academic as Duke put the match away early. Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., earned $10,000 for finishing second.
