Walter Ray Williams Jr. Wins Again!
Walter Ray Williams Jr. continued his push for PBA Player of the Year in impressive fashion by winning his third title of the tail and fifth of the year at the National Finance Challenge at Woodland Bowl. Williams defeated Amleto Monacelli in the title match, 237-231, to earn the $20,000 first-place check and his 29th career title. Williams, Orlando, then lost to Brian Voss in the $10,000 winner-take-all National Finance Challenge Match, 266-220. Voss, Atlanta, earned his spot fn the challenge match by winning the National Finance Championship at the start of the fall tour in Virginia Beach, Va. "I only had six titles before 1993 and now I've won 23 In the last six years," said Williams. "I can't believe I'm this close to 30 titles. It's been an incredible run." Monacelli got it going early in the final match, striking on his first three shots. Williams struck in frame one, then converted two single-pin spares in frames two and three before putting together five consecutive strikes. Monacelli's only mistake came in the fourth frame when he was unable to convert the difficult 2-10 split. Williams took the lead after Monacelli's open frame and never relinquished it, converting a spare in the ninth and striking on his first shot in the 101h to secure the win. Monacelli settled for the second-place check worth $11,000. But Williams ran into a buzzsaw in Voss In the $10,000 winner-take-all challenge match.
