Walter Ray Williams Jr. won his second title in three weeks and fourth of the year by defeating tournament leader Tommy Delutz Jr. in the finals of the PBA Tour's Bay City Classic. Williams, who now bowls out of Orlando, coasted to a 234-156 win over Delutz, Flushing, N.Y., to earn the $18,000 first-place check and his 28th career title. The win also tied Williams with Parker Bohn III for most wins In 1998. Delutz, who had qualified as the No. 1 seed for the first time in his career and was seeking his first title, struggled early and often in the final match. He started with an open frame after failing to convert the 1-2-4-6-10 "washout." He struck In frames two and three, but left three consecutive open frames in the fourth, fifth and sixth when he could not convert a pair of splits and another 1-2-4-6-10 "washout." Williams struck in seven of his first nine frames and converted spares In the other two to put the match away well before the final frame. "1 wasn't real comfortable in practice, but I changed my ball surface before we started and that helped," said Williams. "I was able to find a decent reaction and was fortunate that my opponents didn't seem to have one and weren't able to put up any big scores against me." The win was the second of the fall for Williams, after he had failed to make a championship round appearance during the 10-event Spring/Summer Tour.
