Duke Rules Rochester
Norm Duke never led the title match of the PBA Tour's Greater Rochester Open until it really counted -at the end. Duke doubled in the 10th frame and then got nine pins on his final shot to defeat Steve Hoskins and earn his second title of the year. The 213-211 victory was worth $18,000 and gives Duke 15 career titles. "I haven't won since Tucson so this really helps my confidence," said Duke. "I've had a lot of top 10s and some good performances, but I've only made three telecasts this year. I've just been fortunate to win two of them." Duke, who entered the championship round as the tournament leader, would admit to being fortunate against Hoskins, who was looking for back-to-back wins at Marcel's Olympic Bowl. Hoskins started the final match with strikes in his first three frames and then converted spares in his next three. Duke struggled, converting single-pin spares in six of his first seven frames, managing to strike in only frame flue. But Hoskins faltered In the seventh frame, failing to convert the 2-4-5 combination as he chopped the 2 and 4 pins off the 5-pin. Hoskins rebounded from the open frame with strikes in the eighth and ninth frames, while Duke spared and struck in his eighth and ninth. Hoskins had a chance to close Duke out in the 10th frame, but left a 10-pin on his first shot, which he converted for a spare, and then struck on his "fill" ball. Duke, Clermont, Fla., got up in the 10th frame needing two strikes and eight pins to win. He threw the double, carrying a high hit on his first shot and a light hit on his second, before getting nine pins on his last shot to escape with the win. The win was Duke's second in Rochester, having also captured the 1994 event. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
