Williams Jr. Wins Third Title Of Year
Walter Ray William Jr., a PBA Hall of Famer from Orlando, Fla., defeated rookie Robert Smith, 214-188, in the championship match of the Brunswick Long Island Open to earn his third title of the year, his 27th career win, and the $19,000 first-place check. Williams qualified as the tournament leader for the second consecutive week, but would find the outcome more to his liking in Coram than he had the previous week in Virginia Beach, Va. In the title match he faced Smith, a rookie from Simi Valley, Calif. Smith, the No. 2 seed, advanced to the final match by defeating Brian Himmler in the semifinal, 239-203. But Smith started slowly against Williams, converting a pair of singlepin spares in the first two frames and suffering an open frame In the third when he could not convert the 4-9 split. Williams took advantage of Smith's slow start, striking in four of his first six frames and converting single-pin spares in the other two. Smith only had one open frame, but was unable to throw consecutive strikes until the 10th creme. A spare by Williams in the seventh and strikes in frames eight and nine sealed the win for Williams, leaving Smith with the second-place check for $10,000. "The open frame Robert had early in the match certainly helped, but we had a long way to go at that point," said Williams. "He got tapped a couple times later in the match and ii he hadn't It would have been a closer match." Williams' 27 career titles moves him into third place all-time. Only Earl Anthony (41) and Mark Roth (34) have won more on the PBA's National Tour. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
