Voss Bags 20th Career Title
Brian Voss joined an elite group of players as he earned his 20th career PBA Tour title by winning the inaugural National Finance Championship at the Virginia Beach Pavilion. Voss, Atlanta, defeated tournament leader Walter Ray Williams Jr., Orlando, Fla., 265-257, before a raucous crowd in the PBA Tour's first arena finals of the year. The win was the second by Voss this year, earning him a $20,000 payday and qualifying him for the National Finance Challenge in Indianapolis. That event concluded with a winner-take-all challenge match between Voss and the winner in Indianapolis. "Not many pros get to 20 wins," said Voss, who became just the 11th player to accomplish the feat. "I wasn't thinking about it in the 10th frame when I needed those strikes to win, but I can savor it now. Plus, it qualified me for the challenge match in Indy." The title match featured 20 strikes and was close throughout as neither player led by more than 13 pins. Voss opened with three consecutive strikes, then fell victim to a pocket 7-10 split in the fourth, leading to an open frame. Williams started with two strikes, converted a 4-pin for a spare in the third, then reeled off four consecutive strikes before converting the 2-8 combination in frame eight for another sare. Voss rebounded from his open frame in the fourth by striking on each shot through frame nine. Williams, finishing first, put the pressure on Voss by closing with four consecutive strikes, forcing Voss to get two strikes in the 10th frame and get two pins on his "fill ball" to win. Voss took full advantage as he threw two perfect shots in the 10th to double, then got nine pins on his last shot to wrap up the win, leaving Williams with the second-place check worth $10,500.
