It seems that Walter Ray Williams Jr. had accomplished everything in the world of professional bowling. The PBA Tour's all-time money leader and No. 1 ranked player had 25 titles to his credit, including a "major" (1994 Touring Players Championship), but had never been able to win one of the pro bowling's "Triple Crown" events (Brunswick World Tournament of Champions, PBA National Championship and U.S. Open). Williams changed all that by winning the U.S. Open in Milford, Conn. The championship round, for both men and women, was contested at Sacred Heart College. Williams defeated Marty Letscher in one semifinal match, 245222, and Tim Criss defeated Ryan Shafer in the other semifinal, 235-793. Letscher and Shafer each collected $11,000. Williams then defeated Criss, 221-189, for his second win of the year and $40,000. Criss earned $25,000 for second. Williams' 26th career win moves him into a tie for third with Don Johnson and Dick Weber on PBA's all-time list.
