Monacelli Wins Final Ebonite Challenge
Amleto Monacelli claimed his second title in three weeks and Jason Couch walked away with a $10,000 bonus In the final Ebonite Challenge at Virginia Beach Pavilion. Monacelll, a PBA fall of Famer from Venezuela, survived a unique three-player format in the first match of the live ESPN telecast, then defeated tournament leader Steve Hoskins, 222-213, to earn his 18th career win and $25,000. "This was my first time in an arena," said Monacelli, referring to the capacity crowd at the Pavilion. "Its 10 times better than any other setting I've experienced for bowling." To get to the title match, Monacelli, seeded third defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr. and second seed Bob Learn Jr. in the opening match of the telecast which featured all three players bowling on the same pair. Monacelli put together a 224 game which was better than Learn's 193 and Williams' 148. A tight title match, both Monacelli and Steve Hoskins suffered only one open frame. Monacelli, finishing first, struck out In the 10th frame, forcing Hoskins to get a double and eight pins In his 10th frame to win the match. He struck on his first shot, but lett a 10-pin on his second shot and settled for the second-place check. The win had added bonus for Monacelli as it qualified him for the winner-take-all Ebonite Challenge Match, which concluded the telecast. Couch and Hoskins had already qualified through an Ebonite Fall Point List while Monacelli's win secured the final spot. Monacelli shot 252 in the three-person match, but was eliminated when Couch and Hoskins tied at 258. Couch won the two frame roll-off, 49-28. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
PLAYOFF RESULTS-Monacelli defeated Williams and Learn, 224-148 and 193 respectively; and in the championship game, Monacelli defeated Hoskins, 222-213. EBONITE CHALLENGE MATCH: Jason Couch, Clermont, FL, defeated Steve Hoskins and Amleto Monacelli, *258-258 and 222.
