John Mazza thought he had let one slip away. With a chance to close out the title match of the PBA Ebonite Challenge, Mazza opened in the 10th frame after failing to convert a 3-7 split. "I choked in the 10th frame and 1 was sure it had cost me the match," said Mazza. "I had already resigned myself to second place, but I guess it was my day." Needing only a mark and good pin count in his 10th frame to seal the win at Woodland Bowl, tournament leader Dave D'Entremont turned out to be the one who would let one slip away. His first ball in the 10th went high and left a 4-6 split. D'Entremont couldn't convert and Mazza, who had entered the championship round fifth, had his second win of the year and the eighth of his career. It was the first time ever Mazza had won from the fifth position. The live ESPN telecast also featured Del Ballard Jr. who was making his first TV appearance since August of 1994.
