Amleto Monacelli hadn't won on American soil since the summer of 1994. Bay City, Mich., had not hosted the PBA since 1973. Monacelli celebrated the PBA's return to Bay City by winning the inaugural Mobil 1 Classic. Monacelli, who had arrived at Bay Lanes from his native Venezuela, defeated tournament leader Jason Couch, 213-191, to earn his 17th title and first since winning the Japan Cup in Tokyo in 1996. His last win in the U.S. came in Lexington, Ky., in August of 1994. The win was worth $25,000. The 36-year old Monacelli had not bowled the first two events of the Fall, opting to stay home to celebrate his son's first birthday. "This is great to win again in the United States," said Monacelli. "It's very tough for me to leave home now because of my family. Other guys can always go home for a couple of days between stops, but I don't have that option." Couch, who had averaged a little more than 250 over his 42 games of qualifying and match play, led the field by 619 pins and struggled in the title match. With the match tied through three frames, Couch, Clermont, Fla., proceeded to throw three consecutive open frames. Monacelli was clean through seven frames and struck in frames eight and nine to salt the match away.
