Walter Ray Williams Jr., successfully defended his title at the Brunswick Johnny Petraglia Open by besting tournament leader Amleto Monacelli, 237-184, for his second PBA title of the year. The win, worth $30,000, was the 23rd of his hall of fame career and earned him a spot in the first Showboat"King of the Hill" match in Harrisburg, Pa. "This Is special because I'm on the staff of Brunswick and they sponsor this event," said Williams. "Besides, it's an honor to win an event with Johnny's name on it"Fun was not the word Monacelli would have picked to describe the championship match. After gaining the tournament lead following a sizzling final round of match play which included games of 290, 300, and 300, Monacelli got off to a slow start and never caught up. Trailing Williams, frame eight proved to be the pivotal point in the match. With both players on a strike, Monacelli left a 7-10 split while Williams struck. The strike was the second of five in a row that clinched the match for Williams. Williams' win in the final match was the end of an impressive run to the title. He started with a 268-199 win over Tim Criss and followed that with a 225-192 victory over Steve Hoskins. The semifinal match featured Williams against Pete Weber. Williams took the steam out of Weber with a 238-195 win.
