Webb Wins Second Title Of Year At Bud Championship
Consider the comeback complete. Wayne Webb, who hadn't won a PBA title in a city other than Peoria, 111, since 1985, earned his landmark 20th PBA title with a win at the Bud Light Championship at Sports Plus, in Lake Grove, N.Y. Webb defeated fellow PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli in the final match, 181-173, to earn $37,000 and his second title in less than a month. "This win proves I'm back," said Webb. "Two wins in a month plus third place at the National Championship. I really feel good about the way I'm throwing the ball. I got a couple of breaks and that's what it takes." Both players had chances to seize control of the title match. After spares in his first two frames, Monacelli doubled in the third and fourth and converted the difficult 1-2-4-10 "washout" in the fifth. Webb started with a strike, but failed to Convert the 5-9 pin in frame two. He then spared in the third, struck in the fourth and spared again in the fifth to trail by 11. Monacelli made the next mistake as a 4-6-7 split in the sixth cost him an open frame. He recovered with a strike in frame seven and spares in the eighth and ninth. Webb doubled in frames six and seven and spared in the eighth, but an open frame in the ninth after a 3-4-6-7 split let Monacelli back in the match. Webb finished with a spare and strike in the 10th and then could only sit and watch. Monacelli, who was making his first TV appearance in the U.S. since February of 1995, needed only a mark and good count in the 10th to win. But a 2-4-10 split spelled disaster for the native of Venezuela. Because of the vast size of the complex, more than 1,100 people were able to attend the ABC-telecast. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
