Mazza Makes It Happen In Brentwood Classic
Leading qualifier John Mazza's first shot in the championship game of the inaugural Brentwood Classic fell into the left channel at Harvest Park Bowl, but he redeemed himself in turning back Parker Bohn III, 227-156, to win his seventh PBA title. "After that first shot, I figured things only could get better," Mazza joked afterward. "In fact, that loosened me up and I dodged a bullet by sparing:" The Shelby Township, Mich., pro pocketed $16,000 for his first PBA win since 1994. Bohn, Jackson, N.J., created problems of his own when he opened in his second frame, then finally struck in the fourth. Meanwhile, Mazza had found his line and launched a four-bagger to lead by 48 pins after six frames. Bohn dramatically spared the difficult 2-6-10 split in his sixth, but couldn't convert the 3-7-9 in the seventh, and settled for the $8,500 runner-up check. Bohn fell to 3-13 in his last 12 TV appearances. Mazza said, "I never took for granted that Parker wouldn't throw six or seven in a row, especially after he had just thrown 250-something in the semifinal. My personal opinion is that Parker is the best bowler in the world. That's no disrespect to Walter Ray Williams Jr., but I just think Parker has more tricks up his sleeve." The city of Brentwood (located in the Contra Costa County's east Bay region, approximately an hour's drive from San Francisco and 30 miles west of Stockton), co-sponsored this tournament.
