Aulby Captures Final Major For "Super Slam"
Mike Aulby once again forced the bowling world to invent a new name to describe his victories after he won the Bayer-Brunswick Touring Players Championship at Robert Morris College's Sewall Center, Pittsburgh, Pa. The TPC adds to Aulby s already impressive resume which includes, The Brunswick World Tournament of Champions, PBA National Championship, BPAA U.S. Open and the ABC Masters. In 1995, those four victories were the "Grand Slam." By adding the fifth and final major to the list the term "Super Slam" was suggested. "Super Slam I like that," Aulby said smiling. "This win is huge for me, especially being a Brunswick staffer. It's the last major I hadn't won. It puts me over $100,000 for the year and qualifies me for the Reichert Cup." The win didn't come easy, a 268-259 thriller, over Parker Bohn III. Aulby began the match by making a run at the $100,000 AGFA film "Picture Perfect Game" bonus starting the championship round with the first six strikes. Despite being down, Bohn finished his game with a furry of seven strikes to force Aulby to double in the 10th and get two pins on his "fill ball" for the win. Aulby calmly threw the first strike in the 10th, then a very late arriving "messenger" took out the 7-pin on his second shot to seal the victory, leaving Bohn with his ninth loss on television in 1996. Bohn snapped a seven game TV losing streak (singles competition) by defeating Bob Learn Jr. in the semifinal match, 250-214. Learn, who was seeded fifth, won the opening match over Andy Neuer, 218-200, then defeated Steve Jaros, 186-181, before falling to Bohn. The win was Aulby's second of the year and 25th of his career.
