Walter Ray Williams Jr. Defends Title In Rochester

Walter Ray Williams Jr. bested Pete Weber in a battle between the Professional Bowlers Association's two all-time earnings leaders and successfully defended his title at the Rochester Open.

The title was the 20th of Williams' hall of fame career and earned him his fourth win of the year and $16,000. The win seemed to make Williams the overwhelming favorite for 1996 IOF/PBA Player of the Year honors, but Williams wasn't so sure.

"I don't think I've got it locked up yet," said Williams at the time. "I feel like I've got a big edge, but you never know."

After a relatively close match throughout, all Williams needed was a mark in the 10th to claim the win. Williams, Stockton, Calif., left a total of 11 10 pins on the evening and the tenth frame of the final match would prove to be no different. He left a 10-pin on his first ball and calmly picked It up to claim the title. His fill ball lett another 10-pin giving him 13 on the evening. Weber, who has career earnings of over $1.8 million, settled for the $8,500 second-place check.

In the evening's opening match Norm Duke slipped by Ernie Schlegel, 208-202. Duke, Clermont, Fla., was then defeated by Williams in the next match. Williams then advanced to the championship round by defeating local favorite Chris Hooper. Hooper, Maple Springs, N.Y., who was bowling in his first television appearance, battled hard against Williams before faltering, 227-202.
