Marshall Holman, who hadn't won a Professional Bowlers Association title since 1988, defeated fellow PBA Hall of Famer Wayne Webb to win the Ebonite Classic before a capacity crowd in the arena section of Thunderbowl Lanes. Holman, a 42-year-old from Medford, Ore., bested Webb in a thrilling title match, 246-235, to earn his 22nd win and the first-place check for $22,000. "I saw in the paper before we started the week that a local writer had me listed at 10-1 to win the tournament," said Holman. "A real bookmaker would never list odds for me to win because I've been bowling so badly. I never thought it would happen again." Holman, who qualified as tournament leader for the ESPN telecast, sat on the sidelines and watched the fifth-seeded Webb work his way through the field. He started with a 215-200 win over Bob Learn Jr. He then went on to defeat Tim Criss 225-196, before taking care of Parker Bohn III in the semifinal match, 207-164. Learn, of Erie Pa., earned $4,000 for fifth, Criss collected $5,000 for fourth and Bohn received $7,000 for third. The title match between Webb and Holman was a seesaw match all the way until the tenth frame. With the game on the line and only needing a mark to win Holman rolled his ball towards the pins and nearly left a 2-10 split. Fortunately the 2-pin fell and Holman had a makeable spare. He easily picked up the spare to secure the victory.
