Traber Nets Third Title In Three Years

David Traber has set a nice pace for himself. A Touring Pro since 1986, Traber won his first national tour title in 1994 and with his victory in the ]OF Foresters Open, Traber now has a win in each of the past three years.

Traber, Woodstock, III., qualified third for the ABC-TV telecast and advanced to defeat tournament leader Jess Stayrook in the title match, 242-201, to earn $45,000 and his first title of the year. The win follows his 1994 PBA National Championship victory and his win last year in the Greater Baltimore Open.

Traber took care of Stayrook by starting the title match with the first seven strikes. A perfect game would have been worth $100,0000 from IOF.

Stayrook a resident of Tempe, Ariz., was after his first title in 1996 after claiming two in 1995, but settled for the second-place check worth $25,000.

After watching David Ozio eliminate Mike Edwards in match one of the telecast, 215-201, Traber started on his way to the championship. He knocked off Ozio in match two, 248-218, then converted a crucial 5-7 split in the 10th frame of his semifinal match versus Parker Bohn III to help secure a 211-200 win.

Edwards, the 1994 IOF champion from Oklahoma City, received $8,000 for fifth. Ozio, a PBA Hall of Famer from Vidor, Texas, collected $10,000 for fourth and Bohn, an 11-time titlist from Jackson, N.J., earned $15,000 for third.

"I've been out here for 10 years now and I've paid my dues," said Traber. "I think every year you learn a little more and everything is coming together."
