Hoskins Wins "Comfortably" In Classic; Handegard Victorious In "Winning Never Gets Old" Challenge

Through eight frames of the Comfort Inn Classic, Steve Hoskins was perfect and heading toward a possible $225,000 payday.

Unfortunately for Hoskins, frame nine yielded a 3-4-6-7 split and his chance at a $150,000 perfect game bonus (courtesy of Comfort Inns and Suites) went by the wayside. However, his final score of 250 was more than enough to defeat Brian Voss' 202 and gave Hoskins the $50,000 first-place check and his fourth career PBA title. Voss earned $26,000 for second. Hoskins lost his chance at another $25,000 when Handegard defeated him, 180-175, in the "Winning Never Gets Old" challenge match.

"This win was fairly emotional for me because I'm dedicating it to my mother Madeleine," said Hoskins. "She had double bypass surgery and was coming home. I think this will make a nice homecoming gift for her."

Perhaps all the excitement of the championship match and near 300 game took its toll on Hoskins as he wasn't nearly as sharp in the "Winning Never Gets Old" Challenge which concluded the ABC-TV telecast.

The match marked the fifth year for the "Winning Never Gets Old" challenge, and the seniors have now won three of the five.

Despite losing the match, Hoskins enjoyed the experience. "I think it's a wonderful match and $25,000 for one match is great. It wasn't pretty or high scoring, but at least It was a close match."

Earlier off-air matches saw Dave Husted defeat Amleto Monacelli, 268-238, before losing to Mike Miller in a roll-off, 6059, attar the two had tied at 279. Monacelli, Venezuela, earned $8,000 for fifth. Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., collected $10,000 for fourth and Miller, Albuquerque, N.M., received $15,000 for third.
