Goebel Repeats In Tucson
Bryan Goebel may just move to Tucson, or at least see if he can buy part interest in Golden Pin Lanes. Goebel, Merriam, Kan., became the first person to successfully defend a title since Steve Hoskins won back-to-back Quaker State events in 1993-94. Goebel, who was the tournament leader, defeated Ricky Ward, 224-217, to win his eighth title and $16,000. The victory made Goebel the first three-time champion in the 35 years the Tour has been visiting Tucson. "I'm already looking forward to next year," said Goebel. "Actually, it hasn't sunk in that I've won back-to-back and three times here. It's tough to repeat because everyone knows you're the defending champion and it adds a little pressure, but you also have some extra confidence when you come to a place where you've won before." Ward got to the title match with a 248-232 semifinal win over Mark Williams. Williams won the first two matches of the telecast, defeating Don Moser in the opener, 235-208, and besting Scott Alexander in match two, 179-155. Ward earned $8,500 for second. Williams, Beaumont, Texas collected $5,000 for third. Alexander, Seattle, pocketed $4,000 for fourth and Moser, San Jose, Calif., received $3,000 for fifth. Six of Goebel's eight titles have come in a little more than two years, but the 34-year-old hasn't changed his focus or goals. "My goals have never changed and I just try to get a check every week and then go from there," said Goebel. "I have dreams, like winning 10 titles or a major and being considered for the PBA Hall of Fame, but I wouldn't classify them as goals." CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
