Arnold Mows Down Field In Reno
In a championship round that featured 42 PBA titles, the bowler with just one came out on top. Dave Arnold defeated three opponents by a total of 10 pins to earn his first win of 1996 and second of his career. The 32-year-old from Gilbert, Ariz., got by tournament leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the title match, 241-237, to collect the $16,000 first-place check. "I'm really drained and exhausted now," said Arnold. "You have to feel fortunate whenever you win, but winning for the second time shows the first win wasn't a fluke." If anyone should be convinced that Arnold is no fluke, it's Williams. Both of Arnold's titles have come at the expense of the PBA Hall of Famer. Arnold's first title, which came in Sayville, N.Y., in 1993, was a 269-258 thriller that went down to the final frame. This win was no different. Arnold needed a strike on his first shot in the 10th and then seven pins on his next ball to secure the win. He followed that script exactly to notch the victory. The win was especially tough for Williams because he led the tournament by 430 pins. The 16-time titlist from Stockton, Calif., is now 5-16 as the top seed. After watching Dave Husted defeat Mike Miller in the opening match, 215-196, Arnold started his run at the title. In match two, Arnold defeated Miller, 227-224. Up next was 1994 IOF/PBA Player of the Year Norm Duke and Arnold silenced Duke with a 216-213 win. Husted, a 12-time champion from Milwaukie, Ore., earned $3,100 for fitth. Miller, a two-time winner from Albuquerque, N.M., received $4,000 for fourth. Duke, Edmond, Okla., took home $5,000 for third and Williams' paycheck was $8,500 for finishing second for the 25th time. "All you can do when the pressure Is on is focus on what you have to do and then get the job done," said Arnold. "I'm glad that I was able to do that three times." CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
