Webb Wins To Start '96 Season

Wayne Webb picked up right where he left off; it just took him seven years to do it. The PBA Hall of Famer started the 1996 ESPN Winter Tour with a win in the Peoria (Ill.) Open. The win was the 18th of Webb's career and first since he won in Peoria in 1989.

Webb, Barberton, Ohio, defeated tournament leader Bob Learn Jr., 229-202, in the championship match held at Landmark Recreation Center, Peoria, III. The title was just his second in 10 years and earned Webb $19,000.

"The last time I won here, it broke a four-year drought and this time it was nearly seven years since my last win," said Webb. "I'm just glad we keep coming back here."

Webb, who finished the match first, needed to strike on his first ball in the 10th and then get seven on his next shot to secure the win. He doubled and finished with seven on his final shot to lock Learn out. It was the second consecutive year Learn has opened the year with a second-place finish. Learn, Erie, Pa., was runnerup to Jess Stayrook in 1995's ACDelco Classic.

Learn, who collected $10,000 for his efforts, said, "I felt like I was making good shots, but the left lane (37) was hooking early and I never really got lined up over there. After I left the 4-9 split in the third, Wayne grabbed the lead and I never got it back."

In the opening match of the ESPN telecast, Doug Kent, Canandaigua, N.Y., outdistanced Marc McDowell, Madison, Wisc., 243-238 and then defeated Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., 182-175. In the semifinal match Webb defeated Kent, 243-238 to set up the title match. Kent, who was trying to win his third PBA title earned $6,000; Weber, PBA's all-time earnings leader earned $5,000 in his first championship round appearance since the fall of 1994. McDowell collected $4,000.
