Brian Voss kept his win streak alive with a PBA victory in his ninth consecutive year by winning the Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes, Taylor, Mich. Tournament leader Voss, Atlanta, defeated fourth-seeded Justin Hromek, 247-188, for the $17,500 first prize and his 15th PBA victory. Voss opened the championship game with a triple, spare and strike to lead by 23 pins after five frames. Voss then opened the door for Hromek by failing to convert the 4-6-7-9-10 split, but he couldn't take advantage as Voss struck out the rest of the way. Hromek, Andover, Kan., had to settle for the $9,000 second-place check. Voss said, "I was surprised Justin started our game slowly, but it's pretty tough to keep your momentum following long breaks between games. I felt like this was my tournament the whole week and that doesn't happen very often. I wanted so badly to keep my winning streak alive. This was just one of those weeks when I felt I could do whatever I wanted to do," he said. The evening's ESPN finals started with Hromek disposing of Marc McDowell, Madison, Wis., 227-201, and then Jess Stayrook, Tempe, Ariz., 252-193. In the semifinal, Hromek defeated David Ozio, Vidor, Texas, 243-191, and the 1991 PBA Player of the Year took home $5,500 for third place. Stayrook earned $4,500 for fourth and McDowell $3,500.
