Couch Still Perfect As Top Seed

Jason Couch remained unbeaten as the leading qualifier and collected his fourth PBA title in the Indianapolis Open at Market Square Arena. Couch turned back second-seeded Richard Wolfe, Arlington, Va., 256-223, for the $17,500 first prize.

Couch, Clermont, Fla., started the championship game with four strikes and led by 12 pins after seven frames, then closed with another four-bagger and a spare. Wolfe never really threatened after opening with a double, and had to settle for the $9,000 second-place check.

The 2,114 in attendance were treated to an exciting evening's worth of animation from the all left-handed lineup.

"I wanted to show everyone here why I led this tournament. This was my tournament to win," Couch said. "I never got lined up until my last two practice balls. I'm an aggressive player and the crowd's energy really pumps me up. Rich knew I was struggling and came right out throwing strikes. I've learned how to throw the ball a little softer and am now working on my versatility."

The ESPN telecast started with 1991 PBA Rookie of the Year Ward topping leading Rookie of the Year candidate Billy Myers Jr., 225-200. Ward, North Fort Myers, Fla., next ousted third-seeded John Mazza, 241-194 but then fell to Wolfe, 257-234. Ward took home $5,500, Mazza, Shelby Township, Mich., earned $4,500 for fourth, and Myers, Temple City, Calif., $3,500.
