Amleto Monacelli Wins Second Japan Cup Title

Amleto Monacelli returned to the site of his first title and came away with his 16th PBA Tour crown in the 11th annual Oronamin C Japan Cup at Tokyo Port Bowl. Venezuela's Monacelli defeated leading qualifier Dave D'Entremont, 232-215, for the $50,000 first prize and secured the PBA Tour's ninth victory against two wins for the Japan PBA (JPBA) contingent.

Both players started the championship game with spare-strike, but Monacelli stretched his into a triple. When D'Entremont, Middleburg Hts., Ohio, struck in his sixth frame, he cut the lead to 16 pins, but then opened in his seventh and never recovered, settling for the $25,500 second-place check.

Monacelli said, "Every year we come here this tournament gets better and better. I lost my feel in the ball when the tape I was using on my thumb came off because 1 was sweating so much. I've been consistent in making match play, but this was only my third N final of the year. Coming to Japan I decided to really concentrate on the last seven tournaments of 1995."

The live NHK-TV finals began with Mark Williams bettering 1992 Japan Cup winner Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 235-233. Williams, Beaumont, Texas, then fell to defending champion Brian Voss, 243-238, who was in turn victimized by Mike Aulby, 280-256.

In the semifinal game, Monacelli turned back Aulby, 248-198. Aulby, Indianapolis, earned $14,000 for third place, Voss, Atlanta, took home $11 000 for fourth, Williams made $8,500 for fifth and Bohn $7,000.

Prior to the tournament proper, PBA's 16-man team traveled to metropolitan Tokyo area bowling centers for four days of exhibitions/clinics and Pro-Ams.
