Randy Pedersen improved his stellar record as leading qualifier to 5-0 in winning the Ebonite Kentucky classic at Executive Bowl, Louisville, Ky. Pedersen, Hollywood, Fla., turned back fifth-seeded Mark Williams, 244-203, to earn the $19,000 first prize and his 11th PBA championship. Pedersen opened the title game with a double and spare while Williams spared, doubled, and didn't strike again until the 10th frame. By then Pedersen had built a 42-pin lead and Williams, Beaumont, Texas, was saddled with the $10,000 second-place check. "I've had some pretty tough weeks this year because I haven't really caught any breaks," Pedersen said. "The only difference was I carried and Mark didn't. I bowled awfully well in earning the top seed and I told a buddy of mine before I came here, 'Don't be surprised if I win.' I just didn't think it would happen so quickly." This tournament marked the Tour's first visit to Louisville since 1965 and a capacity audience greeted the ESPN championship finals. In the first game, Williams overwhelmed two-time 1995 champion Dave D'Entremont, 255-142, and escaped against reigning IOF/PBA Player of the Year Norm Duke, 193-191. Needing nine pins to advance, Duke's six-count sent Williams into the semifinal game. In the semifinal game, Williams seemed to build momentum against Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, Pa, 259-215, who earned $6,000 for third place. Duke, Edmond, Okla., took home $5,000 for fourth and D'Entremont, Middleburg Hts., Ohio, made $4,000.
