Bohn Bumps Off Couch
In a battle between lefthanded roommates, leading qualifier Parker Bohn III bettered second-seeded Jason Couch, 248-218, in the Columbia 300 Open at Highland Lanes, Austin, Texas. Bohn, Jackson, N.J., took home the $19,000 first prize, less the cost of dinner immediately afterward with his best friend Couch, who earned $10,000. Both players opened the championship game with strikes, which Couch stretched into a three-bagger. Bohn came back with a spare and six-bagger to open a 31-pin advantage after eight frames, and Couch, Clermont, Fla., could never close the gap. Bohn said, "Ironically, both Jason and I were lost in practice. I was fortunate to just keep hitting the pocket. I was happy to face Jason, because if I'm going to lose, I want to at least lose to my roommate. We probably have the richest hotel room in town," he joked. The ESPN championship finals began with last week's Tucson Open winner, Bryan Goebel, topping Mike Aulby, Indianapolis, 257-236. Dennis Jacques came on next and prevented Goebel from notching back-to-back titles, 256-246, despite his having made consecutive appearances in the top five for the seventh time of his career. Couch then took the lanes and defeated Jacques, Grand Rapids, Mich., 256-192, who took home $6,000 for third place. Goebel, Merriam, Kan., earned $5,000 for fourth place and Aulby earned $4,000.
