Bryan Goebel became the second two-time Tucson Open winner and the first double champ at host Golden Pin Lanes when he earned his seventh PBA title. Second-seeded, Goebel defeated leading qualifier Bob Belmont, 212-190, for the $16,000 first prize. Belmont started the title match with a strike and Goebel opened right out of the gate, but came back with a fourbagger to lead by 21 pins after five frames. But Belmont could just muster three strikes total and recorded his only sub-200 game of the tournament when it mattered most. Goebel needed a mark to shut Belmont out in the 10th frame, but left the 4-6-7 split and allowed Belmont the chance to win with a double and nine pins. Lefthanded Belmont, Dunedin, Fla., left the 6-pin on his first shot and had to settle for the $0,500 second-place check. "I really made a bad shot in the 10th but got away with it," Goebel said. "That open first frame was the first 'easy' spare I've ever missed on TV. This is always a relaxing week when we visit Tucson. Bob bowled great all week and it's especially tough for him to take since he hasn't won yet on tour. But he will soon." The 34th consecutive Tucson Open telecast began with Brian Voss defeating Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 215-167. PBA's 1991 Rookie of the Year Ward next dumped Voss, the 1988 PBA Player of the Year, 234-200. Voss then came on and turned back Ward, N. Fort Myers, Fla., 236-203. Ward earned $5,000 for third place, Voss made $4,000 for fourth and Bohn $3,000.
