Roth Turns Back Time; Wins 34th PBA Title
PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth demonstrated the fire which still burns within his heart en route to his first title in seven years by capturing the $215,000 IOF Foresters Open at Club 300 Bowl in Markham, Ont., Canada. Thirdseeded, the 44-year-old Roth stormed past three opponents, including leading qualifier Walter Ray Williams Jr., 233-189, for his 34th PBA victory and the $45,000 first prize is the richest of his storied career. Williams, Stockton, Calif., opened the championship game with a strike, and Roth started by tailing to convert the 3-4-6-7-10 split in his first frame. After sparing in his second, Roth unleashed a six-bagger to pull away with a 46-pin lead through eight frames, following an open seventh by Williams. Roth, Wall Township, N.J., clinched with a spare in his ninth frame and forced Williams to accept the $25,000 second-place check. Roth said "My goal today was just win my first game. Then when the lanes turned touchy I decided to play them straight. You never want to give a player of Walter's caliber a break. The lights seemed extra bright today, but then it's been a long time since I'd seen them in person," he said with a smile. Roth joined the finals in the second game, following David Traber's 236-215 opening victory against Mike Miller of Albuquerque, N.M. Roth started with a five-bagger and never let up in his 247-236 conquest of Traber, Woodstock, Ill., and sneaked past 1988 PBA Player of the Year Brian Voss, Atlanta, 201-196. The tournament's top three seeds owned 62 (now 63) titles, seven Player of the Year honors and all three are PBA Hall of Famers. Voss earned $15,000 for third place and his first finish 011995 among the top 24, Traber collected $10,000 for fourth place and Miller $8,000 for fifth. This tournament was the third annual sponsorship by the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF), headquartered in Toronto and which is aligned with PBA's official charity, the Children's Miracle Network.
