Jack Jurek Tames Tums Classic
Competing in just his eighth PBA tournament over the last two years, surprise(d) top seed Jack Jurek held off second-seeded David Traber, 231-228, to win the $140,000 Turns Classic at Bradley Bowl. In winning his first title, Jurek, Lackawanna, N.Y., earned the $25,000 first prize plus a berth into the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions. Traber, Woodstock, Ill., opened the championship game with a double, spare and strike, while Jurek spared, doubled and spared again to trail by two pins after four frames. Jurek kept matters even with a turkey, and then Traber's 10-pin, spare in the crucial ninth frame allowed Jurek's double and nine finish to guarantee his win. Traber earned $13,000 as runnerup, but was foiled in his attempt to grab a second victory in the last four weeks. A belated Jurek said, "Win or lose, I was happy with my performance and just wanted to enjoy it." A former Touring Pro and accomplished collegiate/amateur bowler, Jurek finished fifth in his very first PBA tournament. He explained, "I then lost my tour sponsor after the 1991 season. When you're not making money out here, the Tour's a tough life to lead. I finally relaxed a little bit after the commercial break." Jurek outaveraged the Tums Classic field by more than three pins per game and compiled an impressive 170-pin cushion over second seed Traber after 42 games. In the first game of the ABC-TV finals, Dave D'Entremont topped Steve Wilson of Tamarac, Fla., 259-205. Baltimore's Danny Wiseman then came on and defeated D'Entremont on the strength of an opening seven-bagger, 279-218. Traber was next up and he held off Wiseman's closing five-bagger to advance to the title game, 244-237. D'Entremont received $6,000 for fourth-place, Wiseman collected $7,500 for his third place Tums finish and Wilson took home $5,000. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
