D'Entremont Doubles With Back-To-Back Wins At Peoria
"If I'm dreaming, I don't want to wake up," Dave D'Entremont said upon claiming his second consecutive PBA tournament in the Peoria Open at Landmark Recreation Center. Second-seeded D'Entremont, Middleburg Hts., Ohio upset leading qualifier Mike Aulby, 203-190, after Mike Aulby had lapped the field en route to posting a PBA record 251.3 average over the 42 games of qualifying and match play. D'Entremont collected $20,000 for his fourth PBA title. Aulby, Indianapolis, doubled to open the championship game, but D'Entremont grabbed the lead after sparing and tacking on ha four-bagger. Aulby struck in his fifth, but then failed to convert the 2-4-6-7-10 split, while D'Entremont opened in his seventh and 10th frames to sit with his 203 score. Aulby then could have clinched a victory with a 10th frame double, but left the 7-pin on his first shot and had to settle for the $10,500 second prize. Aulby reflected on a similar fortune when he triumphed against Dave Davis in a 1980 tournament after the PBA Hall of Famer had led by 770 pins prior to going on air, only to bow to Aulby. "I had a chance to win and that's the key," Aulby said. "I threw some good shots but felt the lanes were different earlier in the tournament. I never had the hold area I enjoyed all week." In the opening game of the ABC Sports finals, Jeff Morin of Rockaway, N.J., edged Jess Stayrook, Tempe, Ariz., 257-256, and then was bombed by Roger Bowker of Ocala, Fla., 268-174. D'Entremont entered and his "Winning Never Gets Old" ways of the previous week carried him past Bowker, 210-204. Bowker added $7,000 to his bank account, Morin earned $5,000 for fourth place and Stayrook $4,000 for fifth. This 16th consecutive tournament visit to Landmark Lanes saw a PBA record 24 perfect games posted by the pros, including a record-tying four by D'Entremont (matching Walter Ray Williams Jr's mark in 1993 at Mechanicsburg, Pa.).
