Dave Husted completed a personal 7-11 roll en route to capturing his 11th PBA title in the 36th annual $200,000 Showboat Invitational at Showboat Bowling Center In Las Vegas, where he'd also picked up PBA title No. 7. Second-seeded Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., impressively downed leading qualifier Ricky Ward of N. Myers, Fla., 254-196, for the $37,000 first prize. Husted opened the championship game with a tour-bagger, while Ward struck, then dumped his next shot In the left-hand channel and was down by 43 pins after four frames. Husted spared in his fifth frame and tacked on four more strikes to cruise home and leave Ward with the $19,000 second-place check. Now 11-0 in his last four PBA telecasts with a 240-plus average, the 34-year-old Husted appeared to be at the peak of his 17-year career rather than "semi-retired;' as he announced his status last spring, and has since claimed three titles. "If I start well, good things usually happen, and Ricky never seemed to get loose," Husted said. "Performing well when the pressure is on is what it's all about out here. I'm hardly a rookie anymore and confidence is such a positive factor in knowing what needs to be done." Husted survived a semifinal game scare from third-seeded Chris Warren, who could have advanced to the title match with a strike on the first shot of his 10th frame, but left a 4-pin to bow, 233-227. In the opening game of ABC-TV's coverage of the 36th annual Showboat Invitational (longest continuing PBA Tour sponsor), Bryan Goebel emerged against defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr., 235-212. Goebel then came up short against Warren, Dallas, 231-212, who earned $11,000 for his third-place finish. Goebel, Merriam, Kan., took home $9,000 for fourth and Williams, Stockton, Calif., made $7,500 for his fifth-place showing.
