Justin Hromek went the distance at Reno Hilton Lanes winning the $200,000 Hilton Hotels Classic by advancing from the fifth-seeded position. Hromek, Andover, Kan., ultimately upset leading qualifier Mike Scroggins, 213-190, to collect his third PBA championship and the $35,000 first prize. In the championship game, Hromek opened with a double while Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, never doubled until the eighth and ninth frames, to close his deficit to three pins. In his 10th frame, Scroggins could have won his second PBA title with a strike and eight pins, but his first shot left the 2-4-7-10 split and relegated him to the $18,000 second-place check. Of his four-game march, Hromek said, "I was just excited to get the first game victory (against PBA Hall of Famer Wayne Webb) under my belt. My game plan had to change with each match as the lanes changed. The important thing is to feel comfortable while bowling on TV." In Hromek's opening game of the ESPN telecast, he survived an open 10th frame against Webb, 206-199, before stopping AC-Delco Classic champion Jess Stayrook's attempt at back-to-back titles, 231-191. In the semifinal, Hromek defeated a second consecutive lefthander, Eric Forkel, 219-793, to set up his meeting with southpaw Scroggins. Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., earned $11,000 for third place, Stayrook, Tempe, Ariz., pocketed $8,500 for fourth, and 17-time PBA champ Wayne Webb, Canandaigua, N.Y., took home $7,000, rather than his first title since 1989.
