Leading qualifier Jess Stayrook started the new year in style by winning his fourth PBA championship at the $240,000 AC-Delco Classic at Cal Bowl, Lakewood, Calif. Stayrook, Tempe, Ariz., impressively downed second-seeded Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, Pa., 247-215, for the $45,000 first prize and ended his personal winless drought of more than three years. The animated Stayrook jumped on Learn immediately by opening with five strikes to take a 31-pin lead. Even an open eighth frame couldn't deter the strong lefthander, who closed with a four-bagger while Learn never threatened, and had to settle for the $23,000 second-place check. In the first game of ABC-TV's 34th consecutive season-opening telecast, 1991 PBA Player of the Year David Ozio defeated Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 200-176. Ozio then bettered Stayrook's brother-in-law, Dave Arnold of Gilbert, Ariz., 268-223, before falling to Learn, 232-219, in the semifinal. Ozio, Vidor, Texas, earned $13,000, Arnold took home $10,000 for fourth and Bohn made $8,000. Tournament week kicked off with a celebrity Pro-Am event which netted more than $9,000 for PBA's official charity, the Children's Miracle Network. During the tournament's position round break, defending AC-Delco Classic champion Norm Duke was presented with a Waterford crystal trophy and $10,000 bonus from the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF) in being named 1994 IOF/PBA Player of the Year.
