Aleta Sill/Bryan Goebel Win Merit Mixed Doubles
Aleta Sill and Bryan Goebel paired to win their fourth titles of the year with a dramatic final game in the $200,000 Merit Mixed Doubles Championship at Reno Hilton Lanes. Sill, Dearborn, Mich., established a single season earnings record of $126,325 on the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour and notched her 23rd LPBT title, while Goebel, Merriam, Kan., collected his sixth PBA title and split the $40,000 first prize with his partner, who successfully defended this crown. LPBT rookie sensation Tammy Turner of W. Palm Beach, Fla., and non-winner Bob Spaulding of Mechanicsburg, Pa., held a 46-pin lead entering the 32nd and final game, but dropped that decision, 458-432 (Turner-226, Spaulding-206, vs. Sill-221 and Goebel-236), to earn the 30-pin team match play bonus which put them on top. Goebel said, "We both were bowling really well, buy I'm just glad the tournament's over. Aleta had huge scores bowled against her and nobody wants to bowl badly for their partner's sake, so I really credit her for hanging in there. To be honest, l think Norm Duke is a lock for IOF/PBA Player of the Year-in fact, he's got my vote." This year-ending national tournament for both pro tours began with the annual Merit Bowling Pro-Am, in which amateur league bowlers earned expense-paid trips to the Reno Hilton through Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) center qualifying events. Marilyn Gregoire of Chalmette, La., and Jack Chick of Stillwater, Okla., were the respective women's and men's Pro-Am winners, pocketing the $10,000 winners' checks from Merit.
