Forkel Breaks Through For Victory

Eric Forkel's third attempt as leading qualifier of 1994 proved the charmer for him in winning the $250,000 Brunswick World open at Brunswick Deer Park Lanes. Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., held on against second-seeded David Ozio, 225-212, to earn the $45,000 first prize and his third PBA title, along with a Bayliner Capri boat, motor and trailer package from Brunswick.

Forkel opened with a spare and turkey while Ozio, Vidor, Texas, doubled, spared, struck and opened in the fifth frame with a 7-10 pocket split. Ozio rebounded with a double to cut the lead to 11 pins and when Forkel sat down with an eight count, Ozio could have won by striking out, or forced a two-frame roll-off with a double and nine.

After packing his first 10th-frame shot for a strike, Ozio left the 8-10 split on his next ball and Forkel fell to his knees, only to find Ozio jump on his back in good-natured response to the crowd.

"I was worried about leading by so much (477 pins)," Forkel said. "With the oil carry down I knew David had developed a great shot and I didn't want to watch. I'm just glad this wasn't a Tournament of Champions replay (one of his two earlier runner-up finishes as top seed). It's a whole different environment on TV."

In the first game of ESPN PBA Tour-concluding telecast, Butch Soper defeated Dave D'Entremont of Middleburg Hts., Ohio, 244-192, and then Bob Learn Jr. of Erie Pa., 202-195. Ozio hen edged Soper, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., 228-226, to establish the championship pairings.

Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of this final Brunswick Memorial World Open was Chicago's Special Olympics, which received $25,860 from Brunswick's $15 per pin pledge for the championship round scores.
