Ferraro Wins Ninth Title
Dave Ferraro returned to the PBA winner's circle for his ninth title following an absence of more than two years when he claimed the Great Lakes Classic at the Welsh Auditorium. Ferraro, third-seeded from Kingston, N.Y., upset leading qualifier Norm Duke, 279-256, for the $16,000 first prize. Duke, Edmond, Okla., struggled early and then strung seven strikes, but Ferraro was well ahead by then, and flirted with perfection by starting with the first nine strikes. A 10-pin leave on his first 10th-frame shot cost him a second opportunity at a 300 game after posting a 289 effort in his first game. "To have two shots at 300 was quite an accomplishment," Ferraro said. "It feels good to be back. You never let down out here. Maybe it takes the best player in the world to charge me up. 1 can't ever remember shooting 800 on tour, let alone 803 on TV." In the opening game of the ESPN telecast, Eugene McCune defeated Jeff Morin of Rockaway, N.J., 268-224. Ferraro then came in and sidelined McCune, Munster, Ind., 289-254, when he started with the first 10 strikes. In the semifinal game, Ferraro stopped Butch Soper of Lake Havasu City Ariz., 235-192. Duke collected $8,500 as runnerup, Soper earned $5,000 for third place, McCune took home $4,000 for fourth and Morin $3,000. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
