Goebel Motors To Third Title
Bryan Goebel tossed his hat into the ring for IOF PBA Player of the Year consideration with his third title of 1994 at the Greater Detroit Open. Second-seeded Goebel upset leading qualifier Eric Forkel, 257-190, for the $14,000 first prize at Taylor Lanes. Both finalists were tied through four frames, but Goebel closed with eight strikes and Forkel spared, opened and spared again to fall behind by 47 after seven frames. Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., never recovered and had to settle for the $7,500 second-place check. "I look at what (Norm) Duke and Walter Ray (Williams Jr.) have done this year and they're well ahead the rest of us," Goebel continued. "I've accomplished a lot this year and am just happy with how I've bowled:"Goebel had been stricken with Bell's Palsy while in Tokyo for the 10th annual Japan Cup competition and the right side of his face was paralyzed. He claimed to be 95°/a recovered from that virus and his performance this week reflected that. "The muscles simply shut down on the right side of my face," Goebel said. "I couldn't blink and it was very tiring because it took me twice as long to eat." In the opening game of the ESPN telecast, Chris Warren defeated fourth-seeded Jimmy Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, 232-218. Warren continued against Don Moser, San Jose, Calif., 247-178, before ousted by Goebel, 227-167. Warren, Dallas, earned $5,000 for third place, Moser collected $4,1100 for fourth and Johnson $3,000.
