Hoskins Heats It Up In Tucson
Steve Hoskins captured his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title of the year at Golden Pin Lanes defeating Walter Ray Williams Jr., 207-195. The powerful righthander got by two opponents en route to his third PBA title. Second-seeded, Hoskins first defeated Bryan Goebel of Merriam, Kan., 256-183. Next up was the reigning PBA Player of the Year, Williams, of Stockton, Calif. Hoskins never trailed in the title match as Williams left the 7-10 split in the opening frame. Williams tightened the match to four pins following consecutive strikes in the fourth and fifth frames. The key shot of the match came in the ninth frame. Hoskins needed a strike in the ninth and then a nine-count and spare in the 10th to lockup the win. He delivered his best shot of the day In the ninth and then followed with the needed spare In the 10th to earn the $14,000 first-place check. "I'm happy that when I needed to throw good shots I came through," sail Hoskins. "That 10-pin In the 10th that I needed was the toughest 10-pin spare of my life. I'm not known for my good spare shooting." Hoskins earned the title berth for the second consecutive week. He finished second to Goebel at the Active West Thunderbird Open in Ontario, Calif., losing 247-201. Williams finished second for the fifth time this year and the 22nd time of his career. With his second-place finish, he moved ahead of PBA Hall of Famer Earl Anthony Into fifth place on the all-time earnings list. In the opening game of the stepladder finals, Bill Oakes of Lawton, Okla., rolled past Dave Arnold of Gilbert, Arty-, 247-194. Arnold took home $3,000 for fifth. Oakes then lost to Goebel, 247-209, In the second game of the ESPN-televised finals. Oakes won $4,000 for fourth, Goebel pocketed $5,000 for third and Williams $7,500 for second. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
