Bryan Goebel made official what those in attendance assumed was inevitable when he captured the Active West Open at Thunderbird Lanes. Having earned the leading qualifier position by more than 300 pins, Goebel defeated third-seeded Steve Hoskins, 247-201, for his second victory of the year, which was worth $14,000. Goebel, Merriam, Kan., opened the championship game with six-spare, then doubled, while Hoskins spared and opened in the second and third frames. Goebel then came back with a spare and fivebagger to coast home with his fourth PBA title. This victory also was Goebel's second Active West title, with. his second PBA triumph coming at Active West Town Square Lanes in Riverside, Calif., in 1991, which is just 20 miles east of Ontario. The ESPN telecast began with David Ozio topping Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kan., 211-194. Hoskins then came on and defeated Ozio, Vidor, Texas, 207-191, and non-winner Kelly Coffman of Topeka, 192-160. Coffman earned $5,000 for third place, Ozio took home $4,000 for fourth and Benoit $3,000.
